Located in Chino only 30 minutes from Orange County. The Yanks Air Museum, a – 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is focused exclusively on American aviation history and technology. The collection now numbers more than 120 aircraft and continues to grow. The scope of the collection covers the entire history of American aviation, from Jennies to Jets.

Some of the aircraft currently on display at Yanks Air Museum are the sole surviving example of its type, while many others are rare birds in that perhaps only a precious few of that type exist today. The present location of The Yanks Air Museum is the Chino Airport in Chino, California where it has enjoyed steady growth over the past two decades. Located some 50 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles, the museum is conveniently located in the nations largest metroplex, providing a huge local audience.

Additionally, Chino Airport is well recognized as one of the centers of aircraft restoration and preservation with several different companies that provide those services co-located on the airport property.

The museum aircraft have been restored in-house with great attention to detail so that both flying and static aircraft are considered exemplary examples of their type. Great care and effort has been made to conform to the original manufacturer’s specifications in all restoration projects.

The existing museum campus extends over 5½ acres and includes 76,600 square feet of display, restoration, and storage buildings with additional open-air storage areas. Steady growth of the museum has inspired future plans to expand the Chino facility to accommodate additional aircraft, artifacts and a multi-media education center.

In recent years great steps have been taken to continue the museums acquisition of exhibit aircraft as well as to assemble additional features and programs that will support the display, education and entertainment goals of the museum. These features include continued expansion of the Reference Library as well as major additions to the Photo Archive Collection. More recently, Yanks Air Museum has acquired for display a very impressive collection of scale models that reflect the history of the first half-century of aviation. A large collection of aviation related artifacts have been gathered from all areas American aviation history.

Yanks Air Museum is about to expand by building a second facility located in Greenfield, California near Monterey. To see what we have planned and to find out how you can become a part of the program, please click here http://www.yanksair.com/future-2.htm.
Yanks Air Museum
Hangar A207, Box 35,
Chino, California
(909) 597-1735
Directions: South from Pomona Freeway (Highway 60) on Euclid Avenue to Merrill Avenue, then east on Merrill to Chino Airport, or north from Riverside Freeway (Highway 91) on Highway 71 to Euclid Avenue, then north on Euclid to Merrill Avenue and east on Merrill to Chino Airport.

Two of the highlights for me were the YP-47M Thunderbolt, prototype of the fastest piston-engined fighter to see service during the Second World War, and an F-6B Mustang, one of the Allison-engined reconaissance versions of North American’s immortal P-51. Both of these planes are stunning in their own way, both from the standpoint of rarity and of excellence in their restorations. I would have loved to see them fly, but c’est la vie – at least I saw them. The SBD Dauntless and Bell Cobras – both P-39 and P-63 – were also a sight to behold.

Incredibly, Chino airport is the home of not one but two world-class aviation museums. The Yanks Air Museum is a relative newcomer, but has an impressive collection of flying and static aircraft numbering over 120 aircraft. The focus of the collection is on US-built civil and military aircraft, and many of the aircraft are flyable. Aircraft in the collection run the gamut from First World War-era Curtiss Jennies to such modern staples as a Grumman F-14 Tomcat, EA-6B Prowler, and E-2 Hawkeye.
I particularly enjoyed going through the restoration hangar, where some exciting planes were being worked on. A Grumman TBF-1 Avenger was awaiting its turn, still in original paint, as a Ryan Brougham (the stock version of Charles Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis) was being restored. Beside it sat an F4U-4B Corsair which was almost done, while nestled under the wing of a B-25J Mitchell in RNZAF markings was a very rare Curtiss SB2C-3 Helldiver. The museum’s F-5G Lightning photo recon bird was parked near the hangar doors, ready for flight. A portion of the hangar contained an interesting display of target drones, along with a number of ejection seats and flying suits.
This is a museum that is only going to get better with age. As more of the collection is restored to the museum’s very high standards, an already great museum will become even greater. I am sure that the proposed expansion to be built in Greenfield, California will also be a destination of choice for airplane lovers. Highly recommended to anybody interested in aviation who finds him or herself in southern California.
The main museum building is a very clean, modern structure that houses both the hangar where the restored collection is kept and a nice gift shop. From what I could see, the collection is arranged somewhat chronologically if you walk through counterclockwise – you begin with the Curtiss Jenny and end with a very shiny Canadair Sabre Mk. 6. In between you find some real rarities, including the only flying Curtiss O-52 Owl in the world, a Kellett YG-1B autogyro, and a float-equipped N3N-3 “Yellow Peril” biplane. Coupled with that are such classic fighters as a P-40E Warhawk, an F6F-5 Hellcat, an FM-2 Wildcat, and a P-51D Mustang. In total, there are probably close to 30 fully-restored aircraft on display in the main building

It’s the consummate summer playground. Plopped conveniently in the San Bernardino National Forest , Big Bear Lake is about 110 miles northeast of L.A., far enough away to look like another planet. Replace a smoggy high-rise skyline with blue skies and winds whispering through the pines, and you’ve got the picture.

Those pines are laced with over 100 miles of great mountain-biking trails, more than enough for riders of all abilities. The 9-mile Grandview Loop is a good a place to start; you first ride the gondola to the top of Snow Summit, then bike down on an easily negotiated fire road. The 13-mile Grout Bay Trail offers great single-track. More-experienced riders often head out to Delamar Mountain, Holcomb Valley, and Van Dusen Canyon. From Van Dusen Canyon Road, you can access the John Bull Trail, technical terrain for advanced riders.

Families might consider the Alpine Pedal Path; it starts at the Big Bear Discovery Center on the north side of Big Bear Lake and runs its short asphalt way through meadow and wood beside the lake. The folks at Bear Valley Bikes can advise you on trails, rent you a bike, or take you on a guided tour.

Tip: Big Bear is no secret to weekend warriors; come midweek and you’ll find emptier trails.

Originally a simple adobe structure, the inn was expanded in the early 1930s to become a place where many presidents, kings and stars have stayed, and even been married. Richard Nixon wed Patricia in the inn’s lounge, and Ronald and Nancy Regan spent their wedding night in one of the inn’s majestic domed-ceilinged rooms. Today, four award-winning restaurants and a luxurious day spa await guests. And, the adjacent Mission Inn Museum houses artifacts from the heyday of the citrus barons, as well as treasures from around the world.

http://www.palm-desert.org Palm Desert , about 13 miles southeast of Palm Springs, was once best known for its El Paseo Shopping District , a mile-long street that locals had dubbed “the Rodeo Drive of the desert.” Stores are a great place to hide from the summer heat after all, and there’s more shopping here than even Paris Hilton could handle. Yes, there’s the El Paseo Shopping District with its restaurants, art galleries, clothing boutiques, bistros, and bakeries. There’s also the Gardens on El Paseo , home to Saks Fifth Avenue, Ann Taylor Loft, Pottery Barn, Brooks Brothers, Tommy Bahamas, Talbots, Williams-Sonoma, and Tiffany & Co (that’s the short list).

Of equal interest and fun, over 20 art galleries line the single mile-long shopping district or fall inside the Gardens. Paintings, sculptures, blown glass, antiques, even golf art (Graeme Baxter Golf Gallery). Jewelers? More than 20. Home furnishings? Check. Restaurants? Steak, seafood, wood-fired pizza, fine Italian. There’s also Westfield Palm Desert with over 180 stores and, handy for a hot summer day, a movie theater.
