The diving off Point Lobos State Reserve (four miles south of Carmel) is deservedly famous—it features an explosive tapestry of reef colors, kelp forests, and lots of marine life, from tiny armies of day-glo nudibranchs (imagine beauty pageant snails) to the rare, but possible, sighting of 40-foot basking sharks. The Park Service limits the number of divers to 15 pairs a day, so make reservations.
