The Chino family’s 50-plus-acre North County farm produces some of the most flawless produce you’ll ever see—sleek carrots, fat cabbages, tender squashes, beets, black Spanish radishes, and shiso sprouts, the lot of it for sale at a farm-stand simply labeled: The Vegetable Shop. The farm’s history itself is compelling: Junzo and Hatsuyo Chino, Japanese Americans, made a second start of farming here after being interned in Arizona during World War II.
There will be a line, guaranteed, of chefs and locals waiting patiently with their bulging bags, but the Chinos’ produce is worth the wait. They make a point of offering things not easily found in supermarkets: heirloom tomatoes, sweet Silver Queen corn, multicolored bell peppers. Check out the line of nametags on the farm-stand wall, which allow some of San Diego’s top chefs to pick up their ready-bagged veggie orders.
