San Diego’s Little Italy

FavoriteLoadingAdd to My Trips

The name “Little Italy” conjures up images of red-checkered tablecloths, bottles of Chianti dripping with candle wax, and raucous bocce courts. San Diego’s Little Italy has all that, but with an edgier, more modern undercurrent. Originally a neighborhood of immigrant tuna fishermen, this longtime center of Italian life in the region blends traditional ways with a contemporary bent. You can still see the old church with murals by a Venetian painter, but the fishermen’s tiny cottages along Fir Street have been converted into stylish boutiques, also juxtaposing old and new. Pick up fresh parpadelle, then discover trendy Italian house wares. Altogether, it makes for an entertaining mix of everything Italia, old and new.
