Nearly hidden away between the sprawl of Huntington Beach (to the south) and Long Beach (to the north), tiny Seal Beach remains the quintessential Southern California Beach town, and its tree-lined Main Street has something for everybody.

There’s wine tasting at Vintner’s Cellar, art at the Picture Show Gallery, fine food at O’Malley’s on Main, and camaraderie at Hennessey’s Grill, where happy customers hoist pastrami sandwiches and 18-ounce schooners. You’ll also find a kite store, an ice cream parlor, and—proving this is still a working street—even an old-fashioned hardware store straight out of your childhood.

At the Pacific end of the street you’ll find the 1,865-foot wooden pier, once the longest on the West Coast. It’s perfect for strolling or fishing, and there’s a nice little playground at its foot for the nippers. On weekends, it’s fun to stand on the pier and gawk at the procession of ivory white sailboats making their way in and out of the harbor.

Finish your stroll at Walt’s Wharf, a local institution for three decades. Walt’s is famous for its oak-grilled artichokes, sassy waitresses (be alert if you plan on matching wits here), and seafood, like farm-raised Louisiana catfish, Canadian king salmon, and locally caught sea bass and yellow fin tuna.
